Mtoni: Located on the west coast of Zanzibar, Mtoni Palace was built for Sultan Seyyid Said in 1828
Perched on the coastline, away from the scorching temperatures and bustling streets of Zanzibar’s Stonetown, Mtoni Palace was constructed in 1828 to serve Sultan Seyyid Said (Father of Princess Salme – see Salme soap for more information!). Designed to accommodate the sultan’s first wife, numerous secondary wives, and a hundreds of children (eek!), the palace once exuded opulent grandeur.
Contemporary accounts portray a stunning structure featuring balconies, complemented by an expansive garden courtyard teeming with peacocks and gazelles.
Today, however, only remnants of its former glory remain—a weather-beaten ruin revealing roofless halls and intricate arabesque arches that frame glimpses of lush tropical greenery and the endless expanse of the azure sea.
What better way to wake up than with the cooling, uplifting zing of a mint soap! Mtoni Palace was used as an escape from the heat – and this minty soap is the perfect way to replicate the same effect in your shower! With a blue swirl created using indigo powder, this invigorating scent will help start the day off with a fresh hit of scent.
